My South African Adventure
In 2010 I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa and do research for my research project at the University of Winnipeg.
The research was conducted at a small game reserve; Welgevonden, located north of Johannesburg. The project involved studying various African ungulates and observe their level of vigilance and it was done over an 8 week period. The 5 prey animals that were chosen to be studied included; Impala, Kudu, Warthog, Zebra and Wildebeest. They were chosen because they are the most common preyed upon species by the predators that inhabit the reserve. These predators include Lions, Leopards, and Cheetahs. The results of the study showed that warthogs had the lowest vigilance level despite being the most preferred prey by the lions as observed by a different study several years ago. It was not all work at this camp, there was lots of photo opportunities and here I'd like to showcase some (not all) of the best that Welgevonden had to offer. The links to these photos can be found at the bottom of this page. For more information about Welgevonden Game Reserve visit their website. |
