There are 8 reptile species residing in Manitoba, 2 turtles: the Painted and Snapping, 5 snakes which include the Western Hognose, Smooth Green, Northern Red-bellied, Western Plains Garter and the popular Red-sided Garter snake. Manitoba also has one lizard; the Northern Prairie Skink. There are also 16 species of amphibians 8 frogs, 4 toads and 4 salamanders.
Narcisse Snake Dens, located north of Winnipeg is home to the largest concentration of Red-sided Garter snakes in the world. These pits are where the snakes come to hibernate for the winter and in the spring they begin their mating frenzy before heading back out to the near by marshes.
